Memphis featurette starring Beverley Knight and Dave Bryan of Bon Jovi

Memphis is inspired by true events from the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee.

Tony award winning musical, Memphis is coming to the West End and we have an exclusive featurette with Beverley Knight and Dave Bryan of Bon Jovi to share with you.

Memphis is inspired by true events from the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee and follows the forbidden love of a radio DJ (Killian Donnelly) and a beautiful club singer, Felicia (Knight).

In preparation for the role, Beverley Knight visited the Stax Academy (the Music Academy set up by Stax Records) with Dave Bryan who has written the music and co-written the lyrics for the musical. Highlighting the music of Memphis, the featurette shows Beverley and Dave speaking with Justin Merrick, the Artistic Director of the Stax Music Academy.

Dave and Beverley are given a history lesson where they learn that Stax was started in 1957 which was pre- civil rights movement. It was considered to be a highly progressive studio at that time and boasted artists such as Otis Redding, Booker T. & the MGs, The Emotions, Sam & Dave, Jean Knight and Isaac Hayes.
