Shy Nature are pretty darn busy right now. Not only are they drawing ever closer to the release of their new EP ‘Birthday Club’, the trio are also smack bang in the middle of playing on the DIY Presents Tour 2014 in Association with PledgeMusic along with Flyte. Yet, even with such a packed schedule, the band have still managed to put together a playlist for us. D’awww.
Choosing to tackle one of the most challenging yet brilliant themes when it comes to the ol’ mixtape, the three-piece have titled their effort ‘Teenage nostalgia’. Everything you could possibly hope to reminisce to lies within these fifteen songs: The Smiths, check. Weezer, check. System Of A Down? Why the hell not!
“Everyone remembers the anthems of their teenage years,” the band explain, when surmising their choices. “Nu-metal kids whose tastes turned strictly electronic still keep a soft spot for the odd Korn track. Our playlist takes a step back to some of the pubescent jams we still rock today.”
The tracklisting of the band’s soundtrack can be found below.
Weezer – Undone – The Sweater Song
As played repeatedly by most aspiring teenage guitarists.
Nirvana – Lithium
When I was about 15 I used to go to a rock club in Glasgow called Cathouse. This was always one of the songs everybody was waiting to hear.
Manic Street Preachers – Faster
The frenetic vocal delivery is great.
Deftones – Be Quiet And Drive
Would listen to the start of this song on repeat… The guitar sound when everything drops in is so satisfying.
Fugazi – Epic Problem
The last minute or so, starting with the muted guitar and vocal break, used to (and still does) make me excited.
Radiohead – Just
Great song. Great album. Iconic music video.
Pixies – Monkey Gone To Heaven
“If man is 5, then the devil is 6…” – the sort of lyrics that would’ve been used as an MSN screen name.
The Shins – Turn A Square
Walking guitar lines and classic Shins lyrics. Like many of my favourite tracks back then, I could listen on repeat about 10 times or more.
Wilco – Nothing’severgonnastandinmyway (Again)
Love the claps and the wandering mellotron part in the chorus. This song always makes me feel good.
The Smiths – Shoplifters Of The World Unite
A band that were easy to obsess about. Such a big lift into the chorus.
Queens Of The Stone Age – Feel Good Hit Of The Summer
Teenage me thought this was a really cool song title, which just made me like the song itself more.
The Smashing Pumpkins – 1979
Still sounds totally fresh today.
Pulp – Something Changed
Thanks to my older brothers for getting me into this band. Jarvis is a hero.
Jimmy Eat World – Bleed American
Heard this late at night on my walkman radio and scrambled to write it down. It was cool when radio was the main way to hear new tracks and there was no option to rewind and listen again.
System of a Down - Chop Suey
A universal rock club singalong.
