New music guide The Neu Bulletin (23rd February 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Songhoy Blues, Cloud Castle Lake and Super Squarecloud.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to.Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Songhoy Blues
London, Rough Trade East (free, 7pm) and Barfly (headline)
Mali’s Songhoy Blues are readying the release of their continent-crossing debut ‘Music in Exile’. Out 2nd March on Transgressive, it’s being previewed with two shows in one night for the Gao group. They play the capital’s Rough Trade East for a free evening show, before moving onto Camden Barfly, support coming from Jack Cheshire and Habitats.
THE BIG NEU THING:
Cloud Castle Lake - Turn Your Head
Accompanying their otherworldly ‘Glacier’ single (like Radiohead flipping their ‘King of Limbs’ sessions upside down), Dublin’s Cloud Castle Lake show a different side on ‘Turn Your Head’. Instead of reaching a crazed peak, this is a song that prefers to nestle in dark corners, showcasing the barely visible strands of this curious group’s imaginations. Yes, it still sounds like music made for (and by) aliens, but it’s a strung out, gorgeous glimpse of everything Cloud Castle Lake are capable of achieving.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Super Squarecloud - Coffee Talk
Bright alt-pop sparks Super Squarecloud last struck a chord on the Bulletin with ‘Godot’, a buzzing burst of energy that couldn’t be tamed. ‘Coffee Talk’ is a more subdued affair, filtering the London group’s twee-isms into a more restrained pillow-rester, brought into formation with deft guitars and sun-gleamed vocals. Check out accompanying visuals above.
