Neu Pick: Lewis Del Mar strike out with ‘Malt Liquor’

Lewis Del Mar strike out with ‘Malt Liquor’

Southern-stained, experimental pop has the makings of being huge.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Lewis Del Mar.

Late last week, Rockaway Beach duo Lewis Del Mar played two of the most talked-about shows to strike the UK capital in months. Their razor sharp, experimental pop is doused in subtleties, but it always packs a killer punch. It’s no wonder the pair expanded to a ferocious six-piece especially for the live game.

Case in point - ‘Malt Liquor’, the latest example of their fireball-breathing force. Rooted in simple acoustic strums, the song builds from a gentle giant into the most formidable of beasts. Every second is packed with a new smart twist, whether it’s a blink-and-you-missed-it burst of percussion or a barely-there spoken word sample. Calculated like a tried and tested formula, this is precise to an extreme, worthy of all the attention and then some.
