Years & Years have a very good new video for ‘Worship’
Carpark-centric vid is another step in Olly Alexander’s journey to becoming the Perfect Pop Star.
Years & Years have unveiled a video for ‘Worship’, the 8th (EIGHTH!) and final single to be lifted from last year’s debut album ‘Communion’.
Saving the best until last, ‘Worship’ is backed by a gloomy Matt Lambert-directed clip. Olly Alexander is centre stage, and this video follows the frontman through dingy car parks, where he strips and performs for other guys in blacked-out cars.
After that, there’s lots of elaborate dancing - some of which seems to involve a prolonged facepalm, this summer’s dance move of choice - and wide open-mouthed kissing (without tongues).
It’s another very good Years & Years video, following in the footsteps of the game-changing ‘King’ clip.
About the new video, Olly says he wanted to go beyond his role as a frontman: “So, reality check, I make pop music. This is a video for a pop song. However, the visibility of queer people feels more important to me now than ever.
“I want to stare down fear and intolerance with the queer eyes in my queer face. I want to try to not be afraid. I know I’ll make mistakes, but I want to keep going. I’ve seen the incredible amount of support and love from our fans and I’ve learnt a lot from them. I can only hope that the dialogue continues and we trust each other enough to carry on. To keep making people sit up and think, to start the conversations that tackle identity, gender, gayness, queerness and the inter-sections between them all. I know that I’m not going to be quiet about it.”
