Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Holy Now.
Don’t be deceived by the sunny disposition of Gothenburg group Holy Now. Their all-embracing, seize the day band name is a fool’s game, too. In a similar way to how Alvvays would favour a graveyard tour over a typical weekend picnic, they clash deep darkness with the sound of pure escape.
It’s rare to find lyrics like “Let me fall asleep / I am trying” and “Let me find a space / I am dying” in the company of jangly guitars and euphoric choruses, but that’s how Holy Now operate.
Below, we get to know the minds behind ‘Wake Up’, one half of a brilliant debut 7” that’s coming out via UK label Beech Coma.
It’s due 19th August, with pre-orders available here.
From your name, to ‘Wake Up’, to clips of you playing live, everything about your music points to expressing excitement and joy, living in the moment. Would that be a fair summary?
That sounds like a pretty good summary. We all really love to play and doing it together is so much fun. But we would probably add some sadness as well. The songs are often about break ups, unhappy love - so we want to express that too. But mostly, it’s probably our geeky happiness of playing live that shines through.
And what made you start the project?
Ylva and Julia started to play together in the summer two years ago. It was so much fun so it just continued. Julia bought her first guitar and Ylva learned how to play kick ass drums. But there was something missing. A bit of bass and a bit of guitar and a bit of Samuel and Hampus, so they joined after a while and the band was complete.
Are co-ordinated white turtlenecks - your current on-stage attire - going to be a fixture of Holy Now? Who wears their turtleneck best?
We don’t know yet! But some of us (Julia) has an unhealthy obsession with turtlenecks, so it’s definitely possible that it will continue! But Hampus maybe wears it best? Goes really well with his haircut
Your ‘Dream’ video (above) is a splendid four minutes of karaoke. What’s your ultimate song to sing in karaoke?
Hampus: Halo - Beyoncé
Julia: No Scrubs - TLC
Samuel: Green Eyes - Coldplay
Ylva: And I Am Telling You - Jennifer Holiday
In the spirit of ‘Wake Up’, how do you like to start the day? A rude awakening from an alarm clock? A limitless supply of coffee? Something else?
The perfect morning: waking up with friends after a long night out. Then coffee, meticulously planned sandwiches and a killer album. Enjoying this forever in the kitchen sofa. And forever summer.
