Weaves talk Latitude: “Just as we were about to go on, my nail fell off!”

The Canadian pop-noise crew sat down with DIY after an incomparably brilliant Latitude debut.

“So just as we were about to go on, my nail fell off,” reveals Weaves drummer Spencer Cole moments after their Latitude 2016 set. “I have a piece of gaffer tape on it right now. But it’s okay, Morgan’s going to pour some cider on it, it’ll be fine…”

His guitarist’s cider-chucking antics aren’t the only silliness he’s brought to today – their set overran a wee bit due to Morgan getting a little too excited with a daft improv session. “We overran a little bit,” admits bassist Zach Bines, “I wouldn’t say we got in trouble, though. It’s funny – it all added to it.”

Zach’s a huge fan of the Sunrise Arena’s “old school” vibe, too. “Because it’s open on either side, I dunno – it feels like what a stage might have been like at Woodstock!” he grins.

With their set potentially watched by Keira Knightley, of all people (she was knocking about backstage as the band took to the stage), it’s a triumphant end to a mammoth two months away from home. No word on Keira’s reaction, but singer Jasmyn Burke’s thrilled by the (admittedly slim) prospect of potentially joining the cast for the next Pirates of The Carribean film. “Weaves on the boat! Y’aaaargh!”

“Singin’ sea shanties,” Zach smiles.

With just a week left, they’re looking forward to heading back to Canada, even if only to find some semblance of normality. And, y’know, to get their identities back. Literally.

“Zach and I had our identities stolen on this tour, so we have to go back,” reveals Morgan, clearly a bit perplexed by the whole business. “We had six credit cards, in our names, opened. He had his mail re-routed. I don’t know why both of us did…”

Back home for two weeks, and squeezing in a music video shoot in that time, the weird world of Weaves shows no signs of slowing. “We’re on tour in the States,” Jasmyn says of their plans post-fortnight, “and back here in September.”

“I guess when you look at it that way, we’re less than halfway through the entire tour…” Spencer suddenly realises. “That’s insane.”
