Neu Pick: Newcastle’s Seeing Hands pursue reality on ‘It’s True’

Newcastle’s Seeing Hands pursue reality on ‘It’s True’

Geordie newcomers up the ante with a gorgeous, Real Estate-nodding new single.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Seeing Hands.

Seeing Hands’ jangle-pop wouldn’t usually be associated with a) 2016, a year of endless bleak headlines and b) Newcastle, where the escapist four-piece hail from. Like the similarly-minded Horsebeach from Manchester, they trade in a sun-drenched melancholy that rarely stems from concrete city centres and half-year winters.

On ‘It’s True’, early comparisons to Real Estate only become more crystallised. Both balance emotions like a spinning coin, unsure of which side it’ll land. And both have a serious knack for forging melodic gold out of music always in danger of drifting into floaty nothingness. “I don’t believe it’s true!” they beam, on this latest track. Just when ‘It’s True’ threatens to simmer down, it reaches new hook-laden heights.
