On air: Stormzy covers Kanye West’s ‘Ultralight Beam’

Stormzy covers Kanye West’s ‘Ultralight Beam’

His own alternative version gives shout-outs to Raleigh Ritchie, curly fries, and Lionel Messi.

Popping by BBC Radio 1 to appear on the Live Lounge, London grime MC Stormzy chose to cover Kanye West’s ‘Ultralight Beam’.

Two years ago, Stormzy joined Kanye onstage at The BRITs for ‘All Day’ along with, well, almost all of the UK grime scene. As he explains to Clara Amfo, ‘Ultralight Beam’ is a track that means a lot to him.

Joined by a gospel choir and pealing guitars, Stormzy’s version features entirely different lyrics. In his own alternate version of ’The Life of Pablo’ track, he celebrates faith in a slightly different way, focusing on his self-belief, unsigned status and making it big without losing his independence. ”This is what it sounds like when South London meets salvation,” says Stormzy as  the gospel peters out.

There are also shout-outs to Raleigh Ritchie, Lionel Messi, and curly fries along the way, too. Have a listen here - the cover begins around 2 hours 13 mins.
