Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Her’s.
Earlier this year, Liverpool duo Her’s shared their very good single ‘Speed Racer’, “a cheeky thing built around the simplest of four chord sequences that channels the bright-eyed charm of ’50s doo-wop and the early days of rock’n’roll and filters it through a Mac DeMarco-loving lens.”
They’ve now shared a new video for the track, set in an American-style diner. We caught up with the band to chat about the clip, how two fellows from Norway and Barrow-in-Furness happened to come together, and their upcoming trip to Austin for SXSW.
Your origins lie in Norway via Barrow - how do two people from such faraway lands meet by chance?
We met as a result of our undying love for Paul McCartney and The Beatles, so our subs were destined to collide in the waves of the Mersey.
So, ‘Speed Racer’! Were you bicycle or moped people as young’uns?
We’ve always been bicycle boys (no vehicle licences to be seen). You gotta work for it y’know, we have very strong calves.
You’re in an American-style diner for the ‘Speed Racer’ video - what’s your order?
A mighty fine serving of the blackest coffee. Also we can’t recommend the cherry pie enough, Diane.
Her’s are playing SXSW this month - if one of the many famous people that roam around the festival could wander in to see your set, who would you want it to be?
We’d love a front of stage frenzy consisting of Kyle MacLachlan, R Stevie Moore, Jonny Pierce and of course our loving uncles/managers Mick and Martin (forever).
The band’s new 8-track collection ‘Songs Of Her’s comes out on 12th May.
