Watch Sufjan Stevens play ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ with the Patti Smith Band
He called the classic “a theme song for this present darkness.”
Last night, the 30th annual benefit concert for non-profit
organisation Tibet House took place at Carnegie Hall, which also doubled as the
80th birthday party for composer Philip Glass.
Sufjan Stevens was just one of the luminaries in attendance,
and as well as playing ‘Happy Birthday Song,’ he was joined by none other than
the Patti Smith Band to perform a rendition of ‘The Star Spangled Banner.’ Before
playing, Sufjan said: “My prayer is that we begin to move our hearts, our
minds, our bodies in the direction of love, wisdom, and common sense. Until
then, we’d like to sing a theme song for this present darkness.”
Patti Smith had a busy evening, as she played again
alongside Glass and Alabama Shakes. Meanwhile, Iggy Pop and New Order teamed up
to play tunes including a cover of Joy Division’s ‘She’s Lost Control.’ Talk
about star spangled.
