Years & Years’ Emre Türkmen emerges as Exit Kid, shares video for ‘It’s Cool’

Emre’s swapped synths for guitars on the lead single of the side-project’s debut EP.

In amongst making absolute pop bangers with Years & Years, the band’s keyboardist Emre Türkmen decided to start a side-project, Exit Kid, in a hotel in Albuquerque. After wrapping up a tour with Years & Years, he enlisted drummer Dylan Bell and stated working on a few songs.

Now we’re about to receive the fruits of their label, as the debut Exit Kid EP is coming out next month on Kobalt. And if you’re if it sounds anything like Years & Years, then lead single ‘It’s Cool’ will answer that. The short answer is, not really, no. The track is pretty dang far removed from the polished pop of Emre’s other band, swapping glistening synths for scuzzy, fuzzed out guitars.

The new single is also accompanied by a very charming Claymation video, directed by Joe Baughman. In it, Emre and Dylan crop up as his live-action self, but it’s mostly a voyage through a very bright and colourful world full of weird creatures. The tree the pair live in is eventually brought down by some robots that look a bit like Wall-E though, which is a bit sad. There’s clearly no mercy in the Claymation world.
