Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Joy Room.
Fresh after playing with Sundara Karma, London quartet Joy Room have shared their new single ‘Down’, a fuzzy, romantic throwback to mid-’00s indie. There’s heavy elements of ‘Is This It?’-era The Strokes here, with things getting even grizzlier than that suggests at times.
Speaking of the track, the band say: “‘Down’ was an attempt to capture a more nostalgic sound, a song to match the last sunset you saw. We had these jangly chords and they encouraged a set of cathartic lyrics. I thought I was transcribing my understanding of a drunken argument. But in the process we realised it was the passing of time and the change that goes with it that I was really writing about.
“There’s a valley between now and what could be and ‘Down’ is the acknowledgement that there are creatures that bite and scratch lurking in that valley.”
