Last month, Years & Years man Emre Türkmen emerged as Exit Kid, sharing a video for first single ‘It’s Cool’. He’s now back with the equally fuzzy ‘Caesar’, taken from his self-titled debut EP, out at the end of the month via Kobalt.
Swapping the sheen of his day job’s output for something that feels more like it’s come from the school of Josh Homme, ‘Caesar’ shows yet another side to Türkmen, and his take on fuzz pop is pretty glorious indeed.
We chatted to Exit Kid about the upcoming new EP, managing to be bantered off about salad in the process. 10/10 Emre, 10/10.
Hi Emre! You’re now Exit Kid! How long has this project been in the works?
I started writing songs for this on the Years & Years U.S. tour almost a year ago but, essentially, it’s been going on since I was 15 years old…mainly, if not entirely, in my head.
Tell us a bit about new single ‘Caesar’…
Caesar is, essentially, an obtuse protest song about all the little big men out there currently fucking up the world for all of us.
And what’s your choice of dressing for a caesar salad?
Erm, it’s a caesar salad so it has caesar salad dressing on it. Sort your life out DIY.
Are there future plans for the project beyond the EP, or is it a ‘taking things as they come’ situation?
Exit Kid is a car with no driver. See you in the ditch.
What can we expect from the EP as a whole? Do the first two singles paint a pretty good picture?
I think so, yes. Mostly it’s loud and fuzzy but I’m teaching myself the piano atm so expect a few ballads to creep up from behind the bushes with a chloroform napkin. There was an awful lot of material to choose from but Caesar is Dylan’s favourite so we had to put that in there.
Exit Kid’s debut EP is out on 25th May via Kobalt.
