Border breaker: Ghostpoet gets post-apocalyptic in the video for ‘Immigrant Boogie’

Ghostpoet gets post-apocalyptic in the video for ‘Immigrant Boogie’

Directors Zhang + Knight follow one man on an increasingly desperate voyage.

A couple of weeks ago, Ghostpoet returned with ‘Immigrant Boogie’, his first new track since 2015’s ‘Shedding Skin’ LP that documented a journey across borders in the first person.

The single’s new video, directed by Zhang + Knight, plays on the concept of crossing borders and escaping from aggressive, dark forces. It’s set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world where one man (and all of his posesssions, which much be one heck of a pain to carry) is seen fleeing from an unknown crisis.

In the song, the protagonist’s world view while crossing the ocean shifts from being optimistic in the search for a new life to despair when he falls out of a boat and it’s implied that he starts to drown. Similarly, in the clip, the lone immigrant’s situation becomes increasingly more desperate, as he increasingly despairs and starts shedding his possessions along the way. It’s an intense watch, and one that resonates deeply with the immigrant experience.
