Neu Pick: The Old Pink House go large on new track ‘Talk’

The Old Pink House go large on new track ‘Talk’

We’ve got the first spin of the Newcastle group’s huge psychedelic pop belter as today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from The Old Pink House.

Initially the bedroom project of frontman Christopher Brown, Newcastle-based The Old Pink House have gradually grown in stature, both across their hometown and in size (they’re now a four-piece band). But if their band name makes you think that they might be dealing in slightly fuzzy, gothic rock then prepare to be surprised.

Case in point: their new single ‘Talk’. Sure, it’s got a swirling, vintage synth line, but it’s also a psych-pop powerhouse that thunders along on rolling drum beats and simple yet driving guitar riff. As if things couldn’t get more euphoric, the band even deliver a cherry on the sweet, sweet cake by pulling one heck of a hook out of the bag.

Speaking of the new track, Christopher: “When I’m writing I quite often feel like I’m pulling it from somewhere else, as if someone is beaming the music into my head from another dimension. Talk was like that - I had this chuggy, 70s-style glam rhythm section and this lead melody, but something was missing. One day, I literally just sang the chorus out of nowhere and that was the final piece”.

In the coming months, The Old Pink House will also be playing a handful of shows across their home region. After hitting up a sold out show in Newcastle, they’ll also be part of the bill supporting Manic Street Preachers in the city’s Times Square, and performing at two festivals: Bingley Music Live and Middlesbrough’s Twisterella.
