Neu Pick: Geowulf craft escapist beach-pop on ‘Drink Too Much’

Geowulf craft escapist beach-pop on ‘Drink Too Much’

The Australian duo’s latest is today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Geowulf.

“Bulk red wine + tired relationships = bad news baby”. Crikey, that’s one heck of a formula. But that just happens to be the way that Australian duo Geowulf describe their latest single. The beach-pop duo released their debut EP ‘Relapse’ back in May, filled with glimmering gems that can transport you to a tropical plane far away from the mundanity of everyday life. Currently, they’re putting some finishing touches to their debut album, which will no doubt sound just as sparkling. But with their latest single, there’s a much darker edge lurking underneath.

Yes, on the surface ‘Drink Too Much’ is slightly laid-back, twinkly synth-pop number with skittering, shuffling beats and lilting electronics that drift in and out. Listen a little to the lyrics though, and a kind of melancholy story about trying to forget someone emerges. After a bit of a binge, the lingering image of an ex soon appears, rearing their face from some subconscious level. “Bad news baby” indeed. In its juxtaposition between the lyrics and the music though, it captures that feeling of trying to escape from your thoughts while seemingly constantly getting sucked back in anyway.

Geowulf are set to headline at London’s Sebright Arms on 10th October. Tickets are on sale now.
