Look up the word “zeitgeist” in the dictionary and it’s defined as something that captures the mood or spirit of a particular period in history. Well, on their latest track Leeds trio Polo do the pop version of that, harnessing the spirit of these musical times.
But that hardly means it’s cut and paste pop. Sure, there’s some glacial electro-pop tones, but the trio wrap those up in some of their most warming and precise melodies to date, buzzing with tropical, bouncy beats. It somehow manages to get that balance between ice-cold steeliness and vibrant summer vibes perfectly positioned, nodding towards that familiar zeitgeist but also subverting it and creating something that’s uniquely their own.
Speaking of the track, vocalist Kat McHugh said: “The song is based around one night. It was Halloween and I was hired as an actress in a club. On this night I was introduced to my boss and we had an instant connection. We sacked work off and went out, and ended up having one of the best nights of my life”.
Luke Lount adds: “It’s about someone throwing you off track; you not knowing exactly what will become of the situation, but just going with what happens in the moment”. Prepare to get equally swept away by their pop charms.
