King Nun talk us through debut EP ‘I Have Love’, track by track

The long-awaited first effort from the quartet is out today (9th November) via Dirty Hit.

Today’s the day! After over a year of proving themselves as one of the hungriest, most exciting new bands around, King Nun have released their debut EP.

‘I Have Love’ comes good on all the promise - in our review of the record, we wrote: “Barely clocking in at 15 minutes total over five tracks, ‘I Have Love’ is only a tiny taste of what King Nun have to offer, especially given that it arrives well over a year since their last release.

“Fortunately, here quality triumphs hugely over quantity and no doubt these tracks predate even more excellent material from the budding quartet.”

‘I Have Love’ is out today (9th November) via Dirty Hit - listen to it in full below and read a track by track guide from vocalist Theo Polyzoides.

Chinese Medicine

Nathan Gane plays a wonderful dancey bass riff under my whining about faith. Something in my life made me think twice about organised religion and my own superstitions, so I wrote a little surreal scenario to sing about. Fun fact, it keeps getting added on sports based playlists by different sports oriented organisations and I don’t know why.

Family Portrait

This is the furthest we’ve ever leaned into a pop song. Late late one night in Birmingham, a homeless man asked me what I did for a living and then told me if I really was a musician as I claimed to be i should write songs about my family because that’s all that matters. I think Family Portrait is really about sacrifice to help the ones you care about, the ones you call family. It’s a a stuffed animal with teeth.

Heavenly She Comes

I wrote the words to this one by tearing pages of my own songs and poemy things in half and sticking them back together out of place. Because of this, my definition of this song glides around a bit but as far as I can tell i’m ranting about modern relationships in it. It’s a stompy thing with massive jangly arms and wind up chatter teeth.

Greasy Hotel

One morning after hearing that there may have been a groping incident in our audience I wrote this folky song to help prevent of it happening again. It would serve as an opening in the set to be clear about out stance on this. We are anti-dick head and will do all we can to keep everybody having a good time. Weeks later I got into a conversation with a DIY photographer [our very own Emma Swann, don’tchaknow - Ed] about this kind of thing at a Dream Wife gig and I told her then that I’d have a song on our EP that would be for the safety of women in our crowds. It was that conversation that made us work it into the EP.
