David Bowie Returns With First Single In A Decade, Reveals New Album Plans

Nothing’s going to stop him in his golden years after all…

There’s slightly more exciting news from the David Bowie camp than ‘he’s just nipped out for a sandwich’ this morning, as it seems that he’s not quite ready to settle down into his golden years after all.

Having been rumoured to have turned down Danny Boyle’s request to appear on the Olympic Opening Ceremony last year, Bowie has long been believed have quit music altogether, with rumours of ill health (after he underwent a triple heart bypass in 2004). But as the veteran music star celebrates his 66th birthday today, the rest of us get a little birthday present from him too; his first single in a decade.

Posting on his Twitter account in the early hours of this morning, fans were directed to DavidBowie.com, where the new single, ‘Where Are We Now?’ is already available for purchase from iTunes. The album, his first since 2003’s ‘Reality’, is titled ‘The Next Day’, will be released on the 11th March in the UK, and is produced by long time Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti. ‘Where Are We Now?’ is believed to have been recorded in New York.

A press release writes: ‘In recent years radio silence has been broken only by endless speculation, rumor and wishful thinking ….a new record…who would have ever thought it, who’d have ever dreamed it! After all David is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants…when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. Today he definitely has something to say.’

‘Where Are We Now?’ is reassuringly Bowie, with that iconic voice dominating a reflective track musing on Berlin. You can watch the video for the new single here, featuring grainy footage of Bowie in the city, and pre-order the new album from DavidBowie.com.
