Disney Animation have released the first images from their short film Paperman.
Set to appear before screenings of 2013’s Wreck-It Ralph, it uses a brand new in-house technique called Meander that blends CG animation with hand-drawn work. Director John Kars, animator on Tangled, told EW.com: ‘Drawing can have a really powerful, visceral effect on the viewer. You can create anger and surprise or anguish with just a few lines of a pencil. But it can’t just be the same thing it was. I think for 2-D to be revitalized, you have to figure out a way to make it new again.’
Disney made a return to hand-drawn animation with 2009’s charming feature The Princess and the Frog, but the interview with Kars doesn’t seem to reference the work on that film. For the full interview head to EW.com.
Paperman is about an office worker who tries to get the attention of the woman of his dreams by sailing handmade aircraft across the canyon of a bustling Manhattan street from his skyscraper to hers.
Wreck-It Ralph hits UK cinemas 15th February 2013.
