Following last month’s enthralling teaser for The Master, another trailer has appeared, giving us the first look at Joaquin Phoenix’s co-stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams.
The first film from Paul Thomas Anderson since his 2007 masterpiece There Will Be Blood, The Master is thought to be ‘inspired’ by Scientology (the personality tests seen in this trailer are a clue). Anderson’s script stars Hoffman as the founder of a new religion following World War II, and his relationship with a young drifter (Phoenix) who becomes his right hand man. Adams plays Hoffman’s wife, and Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons, Kevin J. O’Connor, W. Earl Brown, Lena Endre and Ambyr Childers co-star.
The official teaser, titled ‘Hopelessly Inquisitive’ sets the scene even further, featuring another unsettling Jonny Greenwood score. The Master is thought to have an October release in the US, but there’s no UK release date set. Expect the film to turn up at a key festival this year, probably Venice.
