DIY’s been a little swept up by Canada fever of late, and Reuben and the Dark aren’t providing any kind of cure. Reuben Bullock and his band are one of the country’s finest new hopes and they’ve signed up to Luv Luv Luv Records for a forthcoming single.
DIY/Neu has the premiere for the ‘Shoulderblade’ video, a delicate putting together of home footage which so perfectly suits the song’s calm yet rousing call to arms.
Of the song and new video, Reuben described it to us as follows:
‘The song and video both came together in a nice way, neither was really over-done. I wrote the song when we were on tour, with the lyrics scribbled on the back of show poster. It was the first song we recorded in London, and felt like the most current and relevant song at the time…The song is about the past. About love and loss…
‘I was thinking about the video, and remembered my older brother telling me about all these tapes he had found at our parents house. The footage I found couldn’t have been more suiting, almost as if was filmed for the song. I didn’t know much about developing or transferring film to digital and it turned out no one in my city was doing it anymore. Being short on time, the only option seemed to be doing it myself. I found a place that had the equipment and ended up having to pay for classes and buy a membership to work on it there… What seemed like a simple idea ended up taking me weeks to figure out and come up with some sort of finished product. The video for ‘Shoulderblade’ was filmed by John and Debby Bullock, almost 25 years ago. Somehow the footage tells the story of the song perfectly.’
