Samantha Barks Lands Eponine In Les Mis Film

The stage actress already played the role in the West End.

The coveted role of Eponine in Les Miserables has gone to British stage actress Samantha Barks.

Despite Taylor Swift being rumoured, director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) has picked the big screen newcomer to play the daughter of the Thenardiers (Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen are in talks).

However, Barks has excellent credentials, having already played Eponine in the West End production back in 2010, reprising the role for the 25th anniversary concert held at the O2 Arena last year.

Barks came third in I’d Do Anything in 2008, the search for a new Nancy in the West End revival of Oliver! She went on play Sally Bowles in a touring production of Cabaret, and following her year-long run in Les Miserables, landed the role of Oliver’s Nancy in a touring production.

In fact, it was following her performance in Manchester that Les Mis stage and film producer Cameron Mackintosh revealed Barks had landed the role of Eponine, reported at Deadline.

She joins a star-studded cast that includes Hugh Jackman (Valjean), Russell Crowe (Javert), Anne Hathaway (Fantine), Eddie Redmayne (Marius), Amanda Seyfried (Cosette) and Aaron Tveit (Enjoiras). Les Miserables will be released in UK cinemas 11th January 2013.
