The xx Top 2012 UK Vinyl Sales Chart

‘Coexist’ is the biggest selling vinyl of the previous twelve months, but it’s got nothing on Travis.

You wait all year for one vinyl sales chart, then two come along at once. Following news earlier this week that Jack White’s ‘Blunderbuss’ topped the North American rundown, today (4th January) comes the news that the UK equivalent with their album ‘Coexist’.

According to the Official Charts Company, the band’s second full length won ahead of a remastered 40th anniversary edition David Bowie’s ‘The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust’, with White popping up at number three on our side of the pond.

Other notable names in the top ten rundown include Tame Impala, Beace House and Alt-J.

According to the report, vinyl sales grew for the fifth year in a row, with 389,000 LPs sold in 2012. That’s a 15.3% increase from 2011.

BPI Chief Executive Geoff Taylor said, ‘With more than 60 years of loyal service, the vinyl LP is by some margin the most enduring album format of all time.  Although sales overall are small compared to CD and digital albums, vinyl’s collectability and appeal to audiophiles is drawing in new fans, in particular through initiatives like the popular annual Record Store Day.’

None of this year’s top 10 make the chart of the decade so far. That’s topped by Travis’ ‘The Invisible Band’, which has sold 28,700 copies, with Radiohead’s ‘The King Of Limbs’ in second, and Dr Dre’s ‘2001’ third.
