Live Review The Magic Gang, The Old Blue Last, London

Tonight’s DIY Presents gig, however insane, feels like just a small taste of what’s to come

With Brighton’s The Magic Gang - a band taking their baby steps and picking up momentum in the process - all emphasis is on the “Gang”. Here exists a pack, a group who spend every waking minute writing, recording, working with other acts in a Brighton scene that’s offering a dozen different strands. Every member of this four-piece like to work in other projects, and it’s no surprise to see guys in Abattoir Blues et al leading a charge down the front for a DIY Presents night.

Support act Reporters are remarkably fresh-faced, filtering frustrated punk into something undeniably accessible. As they depart, the rest of the crowd mimics their youthful, enthusiasm-first approach. This is a young crowd, bursting with excitement as a headline act only capable of becoming more important as they progress.

It’s down to the “Gang” to begin the melee. Crowd-surfers arrive in special guest form, members of Bloody Knees flying up towards the ceiling at will, with some of Superfood watching on as the frenzy persists. This is a bright pack of exciting musicians, and together through association or a genuine attempt to break big at the same time, they’re forming an almighty bunch that’ll keep surging forward.

Within the set, both of The Magic Gang’s existing tracks (‘She Won’t Ghost’ and ‘Shallow’) clash heads with new numbers even catchier in their woozy, romance-led rejoice. One track, ‘Happy Birthday’, could be the very making of them it’s so breathlessly dosed-up on soaring melodies. Next year’s been spared for the full stampede - tonight’s gig, however insane, feels like just a small taste of what’s to come.
