After initially playing a new SOPHIE collab, ‘Vroom Vroom’, on Beats 1 towards the end of last year, Charli XCX has cooked up a whole bunch of car related projects under the same name, it turns out. As well as sharing the ‘Vroom Vroom’ track itself (sample lyric: “rev the Lamborghini, roll up in a blue bikini”) she’s also only bloody gone and started up her own record label and all, Vroom Vroom Recordings.
Vroom Vroom Recordings’ first release will be a four-track EP this Friday (26th February), with the aforementioned song being the title-track. The label is also planning to release music from Cuckoolander and London-based duo RIVRS (who also have a new video out today) in the near future.
Another track from the EP, ‘Trophy,’ will air tonight on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio station, where Charli now has her own show! That starts on Friday (26th February). A collaboration with Hannah Diamond, ‘Paradise,’ - also from the EP - is set to follow tomorrow on Radio 1.
In a press release Charli XCX explained “Vroom Vroom Recordings is my new, experimental pop label and it will combine my love for bubblegum pop with mystery and darkness. The artists coming up through it will be sharp, potent, deadly, and ultimately, will leave their mark on pop music. RIVRS and CuckooLander are two artists who have so much intelligence, pop sensibility and potential - they know what they want and both have great vision. That inspires me and it’s why I want to work with them. I’ve always been fascinated by shy and introverted people—something that I am mostly not—and I feel both acts are in different ways. It captivates me and sucks me in, and I think their music will do the same for others. I’ve worked with SOPHIE on the new EP and what we create together speaks for itself. Sometimes we get aggressive, sometimes we get beautiful; he pushes me and I push him. I’m making beautiful party songs right now and this is just the start. The album goes to other places and I can’t wait for people to hear it. I feel the most creative I have in a long time and I couldn’t be more excited for the next chapter.”
Meanwhile, speaking to Julie Adenuga on Beats1, Charli said of the record label “I’m just trying to be Simon Cowell really that’s all it is. He’s like the business model, you know. I just wanna be the female Simon Cowell and just be a boss” Speaking about her new radio show on Apple Music’s station, she added ‘I start like doing all these Alan Partridge hand movements whilst I’m talking. I’m trying to hone a style”
“I kind of have a crush on Alan Partridge,” she concluded. “Everyone has a secret crush on Alan Partridge”
Charli XCX has finished work on her new album, her “most pop” effort yet. Listen to a new Vroom Vroom Recordings sampler - which includes Charli XCX’s SOPHIE collab - below.
