Jazz and hip hop fusionists BADBADNOTGOOD popped into Australian radio station triple j yesterday, and decided to tackle a Beach Boys classic for the covers feature ‘Like A Version’.
They teamed up with Sydney producer Jonti to perform ‘God Only Knows’. After a typically hypnotic swirl of clarinets, funked up bass and light lounge piano, they actually performed a pretty faithful, smooth rendition of the tune, albeit with some typically skittering percussion.
Well, that is until the climax. At that point you can faintly hear the famous tune under there somewhere, if you rummage through the full-bodied whirlwind of clashing cymbals, distorted vocals and lightning-fast keys. Well, it wouldn’t be BADBADNOTGOOD if there wasn’t a bit of free-flowing improvisation in there.
Watch them perform ‘God Only Knows’ below.
