Halifax trio The Orielles have shared debut single ‘Sugar Tastes Like Salt’: an eight-minute banger with the kind of experimental ambition that should prick up even the most discerning of ears.
Released as their first offering on new label Heavenly Recordings (the home of Temples, Toy, King Gizzard et al), the track is a sprawling, unexpected thing, moving through pulsing post-punk to twitchy ESG-style brooding dance beats and back out. Lyrically, meanwhile, it references Tarantino classic Deathproof, lifting the line “Well, ain’t you so sweet that you make sugar taste just like salt” to throw a darkly cheeky extra flavour into the mix.
