So, since Bombay Bicycle Club went on a hiatus, what exactly has guitarist and lead singer Jack Steadman been up to? Raiding his crates for all the sweet jazz-funk he can find, of course!
Jack has just re-emerged under the name Mr Jukes, a project that’s been inspired by his love of jazz, soul and funk, and he’s announced his first album under the name. ‘God First’ is out on 9th June and it sees Jack taking on the role of musician, composer, producer and resident “sample-hound” alongside a whole host of soon-to-be-announced special guests.
If you can’t wait to hear what Jack’s got in store though, have no fear. He’s given us a taste of what to expect from Mr Jukes in the form of ‘Angels/ Your Love,’ and yeah, it’s pretty different to Bombay! Built around a sample from Argentinian jazz icon Jorge Lopez Ruiz, it’s a free-flowing odyssey heavy on saxophones with R&B vibes, and also features some soulful vocals from BJ The Chicago Kid.
Speaking of the collaboration, Jack said: “BJ was the first person I collaborated with on this record, and if you listen to the horns in the chorus of this song, that was the feeling I had coming out of the studio that day. Pure awe and excitement. I decided right then not to call this a solo record, but to seek out as many collaborators as I could.”
Hit play on ‘Angels/ Your Love’ below.
