Neu Pick: Italia 90 rise to the ‘Competition’ on new track

The cut, from the band’s upcoming debut EP, is today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Italia 90.

Ah Italia ‘90. Chris Waddle missing that penalty with THAT haircut. Gazza’s unforgettable tears. Frank Rijkaard’s excess phlegm. Luckily, the end product from today’s Neu Pick, a new four-piece with the same name as the tournament, is a lot less painful.

‘Competition’, the first track to be lifted from the quartet’s debut EP, is a vicious opening statement, with lyrics barked like rallying cries. Set over a backdrop of a dissonant, howling guitar riff, vocalist Les Miserable yells phrase after phrase, with more emphasis added to every next spit.

There’s exactly seven minutes of biting, razor-sharp one-liners moulded together to create an extremely pissed-off single from an extremely exciting band.

Italia 90’s debut EP comes out on 30th June. The band will play an as-yet-unannounced release show for the collection in July.
