Across the year so far, both Troye Sivan and Ariana Grande have - aside from becoming two of pop’s most promising young superstars - released emotionally heavy hammerblows as singles.
From Troye’s joyous but heavy ‘My My My!’ to Ariana’s long-awaited, vital comeback ‘No Tears Left To Cry’, the pair have chosen intensity as their weapon. It’s almost a surprise, then, to hear new single ‘Dance To This’ - taken from Troye’s upcoming ‘Bloom’ LP, out in August - be such a laid-back cut, unconcerned with consequences.
Thudding bass sits under the first verse, but it’s washed over by a calming, glacial hum of synth, gliding its way into a chorus so brilliantly free of inhibition.
“We can just dance to this,” the pair repeat, over equally subtle beats, and ‘Dance To This’ perfectly replicates that late night/early morning feeling of tranquility, and takes satisfaction in the simple things.
