Class of 2019 alumni YOWL have had an absolutely massive year, and new EP ‘Atrophy’ is another important milestone for the band, showcasing a marked songwriting progression. Pride of place is their ability to deftly lampoon modern life. Lead single ‘Mammalian Fondness’ is an elegy to the grinding work culture familiar to millions of 9-to-5 shifters. Standout track ‘John The Collector’ tackles societal stigmas around masculinity, featuring a protagonist who butchers his friends to avoid the embarrassment of emotional vulnerability. Frontman Gabriel Byrde delivers his message with an endearing intensity that is knowing while avoiding arrogance. Sonically it’s impossible to pin down; a manic concoction of melodic post-punk and driving electronic distortion. The result is an EP of rare depth that firmly stands the band apart from their peers.
