Hello and welcome to DIY’s introducing feature, Get To Know… getting you a little bit closer to the buzziest new acts that have been catching our eye as of late, and working out what makes them tick.
Recently we’ve met West London songwriter Matilda Mann, Peckham wordsmith Pinty, NYC’s Sarah Kinsley, psych-collective Mandrake Handshake, and now we’re introducing you to rising bedroom-pop star Sukie.
Sharing new single ‘Hershey’ today, the Manchester artist says, “Hershey is an exception from the songs I usually write, because its about one pure happy feeling. Its actually about my boyfriend, which is so cheesy, sorry. But we looked after each other really well during lockdown and I wanted to end the E.P. on a happy and summery note. Theo’s a few years older than me, and I spent a lot of the first part of our relationship hearing about all the stuff he did in his twenties. I was only just out of teenage-hood and I felt like it wasn’t fair, like he had lived a whole other life that I hadn’t experienced yet. Hershey is about realising that I’d found what I would have been looking for for all that time already.”
Completing her latest EP ‘Hey Cutie’, which is out now, we sent her over some qs to find out a lil’ bit more about her…
Describe your music to us in the form of a Tinder bio.
Bit of a softie, talks about going to Morrisons alot, wanna-be baby spice.
What’s your earliest musical memory?
My dad playing The Smiths in the car and trying to teach me how to sing harmonies along with it.
Who were some artists that inspired you when you were just starting out (and why)?
When I first started writing stuff as Sukie, my inspirations were kind of all over the place. They ranged from Solange, Biig Piig and Noname to LCD Soundsystem and Talking Heads and The B52s. I think I as drawn to the playful lyrics and the art surrounding the music. I've also always been a sucker for sad songs that make you want to dance.
You’re from Manchester and are now based in Bath! What do you think of the music scenes there at the moment?
The music scene in Manchester is so fun, there's so many amazing little venues and there's always something going on. I honestly have no clue about the music scene in Bath because I moved here during lockdown haha, so I'll have to find out when things open back up!
Are there any other artists breaking through at the same time that you take inspiration from?
I love so many emerging artists at the minute! These guys are quite a bit bigger than I am, but I'm loving watching Josie Man, Pixey and BB Sway grow so quickly.
Who would be your dream collaborator?
Britney? Hahaha, yeah probably Britney if we're talking my wildest dreams.
Musically or otherwise, what are you most looking forward to this year?
I wanna play a gig!!! A real life gig with actual people!! Also i can't wait to get stuck in to writing music again after the E.P. release!
If people could take away one thing from your music, what would it be?
Everyday life and becoming an adult is boring, but it's also nice sometimes.
