THE GIG
Hello 2014 - Kagoule & Polterghost, Ancient Times - London, Old Blue Last

Round one of four, free entry new band nights: Kagoule and Polterghost share a fair bit in common - they’ve both put out songs via Hate Hate Hate Records and they’re similarly-minded when it comes to putting cutting frustration to tape. They’re joined by Ancient Times, the band responsible for today’s Big Neu Thing (see below). This Hello 2014 night presented by Neu & Kanada starts from 7pm, with DIY & Neu DJs seeing the night through.

THE BIG NEU THING
Ancient Times - HEALER

“Is this the pinnacle of this life?” ponders ‘HEALER’, the misery-rooted new single from Brighton’s Ancient Times. It’s a song that practically delves into the heart of every twenty-something lonesome-type that spends too much time in the internet or with their head pressed into the pages of Morrissey’s ‘Autobiography’. Still, there’s an intense, very Smiths-indebted brilliance to this track that suggests brighter things await these boys. Loosely aligned with fellow Seasiders Fear of Men in producing charming but bittersweet pop songs, ‘HEALER’ is the most fully-formed track the promising group have yet put their name to.

Ancient Times play Hello 2014 tonight, 7th January, at London’s Old Blue Last.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
FOOT
FEET by FOOT

‘FEET’ by FOOT is probably more lazily-titled than the deluge of self-titled LPs doing the rounds these days by big-name artists. Still, this Philadelphia group don’t slack about. Their interchange is tight, their riffs requiring some kind of protective suit to help avoid the shellshock. Up there with Women and Each Other in cramming nifty songwriting through a lo-fi filter, there’s method to the band’s don’t-give-a-fuck attitude.
