He’s not even a Dad, but Frugal Father does make songs of quick-witted, baritone-led majesty.

There are two men in this world who currently don incredible facial hair as well as a strong passion for electronic music. One’s James Murphy, the connoisseur of alternative dance music we all know as the frontman of LCD Soundsystem. The other is Mac Welch, another American-based musician who’s currently operating under the alias Frugal Father and whose songs have more in common with Murphy’s than you might think.

The best LCD Soundsystem songs, of course, are the ones which show Murphy’s deadpan sense of humour; his smugness and wit in the way he depicts everything around him. What was so great about this was the way that it evoked Murphy as the coolest character in the club: he was the one who caught everyone’s eye when he walked through the door.

Fitting then, that Frugal Father’s ‘Red Headed Hipster’ (yeah, that’s really what it’s called) begins with some brilliant lyricism: “I walk in with my hands on my hips and a homemade whiskey-twist,” he croons in a Matt Berginer-esque baritone over a pulsating, bass-heavy beat. What’s really great about this song is how it quickly escalates into an incredible groove that seduces your feet into tapping the ground against your will. It explodes into shimmering bleeps and bloops that make you feel like you’re Welch’s wingman, alongside him in this defining moment that he meets his red headed hipster.\

But the real grin will naturally course across your face when the layers all collide with each other; Welch’s vocals taking on an almost sarcastic melodramaticism as he yelps “and that was pretty great / cause it’s not cool to hate, no!” – the kind of line you and your friends could easily find yourselves yelling as the vodka Redbull you just purchased flies into the air due to your excruciating enthusiasm on the dancefloor. “We don’t have to be best friends, but I like your cardigan / let’s dance!”
