News 2:54: ‘We’ve Written A Full Album Now’

Colette and Hannah Thurlow, better known as 2:54, have just released their new four-track EP, ‘Scarlet’, through Fiction; it follows on from their limited edition vinyl-only release, ‘On A Wire’. They’re also just off tour from supporting The Maccabees and The Big Pink. The girls take a break from writing in their native Bristol to answer a few of our questions.

So you’ve just released your debut video, for ‘Scarlet’ (above). Where was it filmed?
In a Danish forest in Copenhagen with Jeppe and his wonderful team.

Did you have much involvement in the treatment?
Yes, we had an open dialogue with Jeppe throughout the process. We’re really happy with the results.

You’re also not long back off tour with The Maccabees and The Big Pink. Have you done much touring before?
Yeah we’ve been touring off and on for the past year and a bit, we love it.

Do you have enough songs that you can pick and choose for your live setlist, or are you a bit restricted?
Yes. We’ve written a full album now, as well as the EP, so there’s plenty to pick from.

How do you think the material you played was received?
Well we hope, we’ve been lucky enough to play to some amazing audiences, and we’ve always enjoyed the shows.

‘Scarlet’ is the lead track on your new EP. What do you think this four track collection offers that differs from your previous release/s?
Scarlet was the natural next step in our family of songs, writing it felt like a really important moment for us so it was a instinctive choice for our first proper single.

What attracted you to releasing an EP, rather than - say - a single with a few extra b-sides?
The other three tracks were some of the first bits we wrote. While we didn’t feel the B-sides were right for the album it felt like a good opportunity to get them out there… But we’re just happy to be releasing stuff full-stop.

Do you have any other releases in the works?
Next year we’ll have our album out in the Spring, as well as more singles. It’s going to be a very busy times.
