If there are two attributes that a new band usually needs to succeed then it is ambition and passion. These are qualities that Edinburgh quintet Cancel The Astronauts has in spades.

It has been a long slog for the band since they formed in 2007. Despite being well known in Scottish music circles the band are yet to make a real impression throughout the UK. This should almost certainly change with last month’s release of their debut album ‘Animal Love Match’.

Cancel The Astronauts sound is a glorious pop rush of boundless effervescence, innumerable hooks and a heartfelt soul that burns throughout the ten tracks that make up their debut. The band share much of the same DNA as other recently successful guitar groups like Two Door Cinema Club as well as some of their illustrious Scottish predecessors like We Were Promised Jetpacks. There is an alluring widescreen quality to some of their more expansive pieces that suggests they are a band that is only going to evolve and progress. It would take a hard heart indeed to not find something to savour in guitar pop as brilliantly executed as this.
