Would the Last Shadow Puppets stylish brand of 007-ready rock ‘n roll have made any inroads without the names of Alex Turner and Miles Kane being plastered all over the press campaign? Now’s the time to find out. Cave Birds’ debut single, ‘Some Lightning Thrill’, which came out this week, is something of a litmus test for the debate in question; a pop song in its most fancy suit. All missing is the extravagant string section and you’d have something prepped for ‘The Age of the Understatement pt.2’.
Leeds-based, the band have a distinct amount of secrecy fluttering around their name. Perhaps not to quite the same extent, but it does remind you of a certain Hurts; big, bold pop songs just waiting to be unleashed to the unsuspecting masses.
‘Some Lightning Thrill’, at the very least, is brash and excitable enough to catch the odd wandering gaze. Equipped for Bond themes and cinematic car chases, it’s an all-action example of big ambition. Not to everyone’s taste, we’ll grant you that, but they do represent something of a tasteful version of Turner and his sidekick.
