Once could be a fluke. Even twice could be a coincidence. But three times is pretty damned convincing. Parisian duo Champions League came to DIY’s attention a few months ago when they released two of the most luscious, opulent tracks of the summer with ‘In Case You Needed Reassurance’ and ‘Paris Is Our Playground’. This was a rapid one-two of wonderfully grandiose shots of unabashed pop that, tempered with ambient textures and disco-influenced piano hooks, immediately announced Champions League as something special.

Most recent release ‘My Dears’ sees the pair continue in much the same vein. A wash of densely layered electronic fuzz provides the canvas for an addictive guitar line that sounds like it was stolen directly from Nile Rodgers’ brain, while vocalist Benjamin Cholet’s reverb-hazed drawl lends the track an air of distinctly Parisian allure. This male/male duo will inevitably draw comparisons with London’s Mount Kimbie, but the music is only fleetingly connected. The same pastiche of distinctive electronics is there, but Champions League are much more champagne and celebrations to Mount Kimbie’s coffee and introversion.
