News Coves: ‘We’re Going To Keep Getting Better’
We catch up with the Leamington Spa twosome ahead of tonight’s DIY Presents… EP launch.
Coves are preparing for the launch of their new EP ‘Cast A Shadow’ tonight at Power Lunches, London. With the likes of She’s So Rad and Modern Borders turning out in support, it’s bound to be a great night. We catch up with the Leamington Spa twosome ahead of the show to get to know them a little better.
Hi Coves, you’re about to launch your second EP, ‘Cast A Shadow’ this week. How are you feeling about the release?
Really good…we haven’t been doing this long so it’s ace to have a release already
Is it more or less pressure than the first EP?
The first EP wasn’t really an EP…we had just been messing round recording a few songs and stuck them up on Soundcloud and Bandcamp
Is the new release a follow on from the earlier material or in your opinion does it see much development?
We’re just recording songs as we wish. We’re going to keep getting better as we learn to use the studio more so I guess it’s going to be a continued development
What made you choose EPs over singles?
Well, we wouldn’t want to choose between our children, so Cross Keys decided to put out an EP.
What are you working on at the moment?
A few songs that sound like they have been recorded in an oven as that’s how hot the studio is right now. One is a five minute wig out…I’m excited about this.
Do you have any plans for an album?
Well, we have just ticked off one of our dreams by having a release on 7’ but to have a full album on vinyl, two disc, gatefold fancy artwork…that would be the dream. As far as songs going we’re always writing and recording so we’ve definitely got the material.
What’s your recording process been like so far? If you could change it in any way in the future, what would you do?
We have our own studio in some disused offices in Leamington…it’s just a big pile of old junk but it’s like our own little world, I wouldn’t change it at all. We just gather plenty of supplies, lock the door and stay in there until we have written something good.
Talk us through how you write new material.
1. Turn gain up full on desk.
2. Plug in mic.
3. Record noises.
4. Arrange noises.
5. Beck comes round.
6. We get battered and make a song!
How do you feel about performing your own EP launch?
Can’t wait! Until now we had been working so hard on our recordings we hadn’t really put much thought into our live show. We have been working really hard on the show over the last couple of weeks, have drafted in a drummer and made it much more of an experience…can’t wait to play it for the first time tomorrow at the launch.
Give us three reasons why people should come down tomorrow night.
To support Cross Keys - they are an awesome bunch of guys, a true indie label who are really passionate about what they do.
If you like the tunes come and see them live.
Awesome support acts, She’s So Rad and Modern Borders
Finally, where can people see you live next?
A load more dates being confirmed soon, like us on Facebook and we will keep you updated.
