Some recipes, it seems, are timeless.

Some things will always go on no matter the conditions that surround them. Just like death and taxes, one of the few other certainties in life is that there will always be a couple of bros who want to get together and make some scuzzy slacker rock tunes. Hyacinth Girl and Cargo Cult are two bands who have been doing so for a while now, playing any number of awkward spaces and DIY gigs, supporting bands that you’ve never heard of but are definitely highly influential in the right circles. If only you read the right ‘zines, you’d have known about them already.

Either way, being in one good band is rarely enough for the lo-fi scene, and pieces of each of the aforementioned outfits have got together to make an EP under the name Daily Life, and it’s pretty glorious stuff. Just like anything even remotely in this genre, it’s influenced by the might of Pavement, the delivery offhand and lazy but the melodies are as solid as a rock. Some recipes, it seems, are timeless - there’s very little that could be classified as innovative here, and everything seems to be done with the impression that it could have Beavis and Butthead making snarky comments over the top - but when the songs are constructed with as much strength as this, it’s a creation that proves difficult to resist.
