Dark Mother

Neu Dark Mother

The closest thing that’s ever going to come to a triumphant ‘witch-house revival’.

Witch House was a short-lived phenomenon that most likely stopped short upon the release of SALEM’s debut album. From there on, the genre branched out and artists previously shackled with the tag expressed themselves through different geners (oOoOO, Balam Acab). But the idea of it all; the themes of darkness, decay; the use of short, sharp beats and eerie, experimental synthetics - this lives on. It has to.

Dark Mother are the closest thing that’s ever going to come to a triumphant ‘witch-house revival’. The Denver pair (Brandan and Hanns) have the innate ability of being able to merge interesting songs with obscure computer symbols and aggressive, strangely beautiful artwork. Back to the songs: They’re strange, warped efforts, with an oddly anthemic quality. You can imagine them being played into the early hours at underground European clubs; accompanying a derelict setting. Every witch-house box is ticked, but there’s more to this music than a simple by-the-manual quality.
