News Delapaz

Imaginative, warm, post-chillwave.

If you’re on Twitter, if you follow anybody who vaguely even thinks that they’re a part of the music industry – or, more specifically, if you follow anyone who spends every waking moment wishing they were drawing a liveable salary from the decrepit world of labels and PR, you’ve probably heard of The Weeknd. Even if his influence doesn’t yet go much beyond a couple of bloggers and tastemakers, there’s already a raft of artists trying to ape his hot-n-heavy rhymes over hipster beats.

Hoping to be at the crest of that particular wave are DELAPAZ, bubbling under in a New York scene that has no shortage of niches that they could amply fit into. It’s imaginative, warm, post-chillwave sound that should win you over initially, an infinitely more rounded version of what various less talented producers have been groping at. The rhymes that it underpins don’t quite have that same arresting quality, however, missing the overt sexuality that has got The Weeknd so much hype, nor the anger and flow that might do these tracks justice.

Despite just missing the mark, it’s perhaps these flawed vocals that keep you coming back, offering a weak point upon which to focus your attention. And, eventually – remarkably – they become charming, and admirable. It gives a bit of hope, too - imagine how good this could be once they manage to record some verses that do these tracks justice. They’re already worthy of filling up your twitter feed, but once they up their game, it’s going to be shocking how humongous DELAPAZ could become.
