Sponsored content DIY & Musosoup’s Stand Out Tracks: Cold Fame, IOTA, Shivani Sen & more
We’ve teamed up with music promotion platform Musosoup to highlight some of their best recent releases.
It’s no secret that discovering a favourite new artist can end up being a particularly joyful moment in life. Whether it’s via seeing them open up at a local show, or through scouring playlists online, there are loads of different ways to unearth musical gems right now, but sometimes it’s good to have an extra helping hand.
So, in order to celebrate the art of finding new music (while making it that little bit easier, and less time-consuming), we’ve teamed up with music promotion platform Musosoup, whose mission statement is to help shine a light on some of the lesser known acts in new music, in a more affordable and clear-cut manner for everyone involved.
Here, we’re running through just a couple of the platform’s most recent releases that pricked up DIY’s ears. So go on, get listening…
Cold Fame — Jawbreaker
Just over six months on from the release of their debut album ‘RED ROOM’, British Columbian group Cold Fame — led by by vocalist Jodi Pederson and guitarist Damian Anthony — have offered up a gloriously sweet slice of pop-rock in the form of ‘Jawbreaker’. Mirroring the infectious vocals and heady rush of MUNA, the track dives giddily into a chorus as addictive as the candy that the track’s named after; you’ll have this earworm swirling around your brain in no time.
IOTA — Smile On
Having formed all the way back in 2017, it’s clear from just one listen to Bristol quintet IOTA that they’ve spent many a year honing their gnarly sound. On newest single ‘Smile On’, the group — who are have become a firm favourite within the city’s live music scene — show off their flare for balancing moments of atmospheric euphoria with pummellingly heavy riffs. Imagine the gnarliest outbursts of Wolf Alice, but with even more venom.
Wolf Mask - Sunday Scaries (YGBA)
Just about everyone will have suffered from the Sunday scaries at one point or another, so it’s probably about time that someone dedicated an entire song to them. Taken from his album of the same name (which was released back in February), ‘Sunday Scaries (YGBA)’ comes from Charleston, NC artist Wolf Mask and — despite is a subject matter — is a woozy delight that reassures, no matter what the working week has in store, “you’re gonna be alright”.
Shivani Sen - The Call I Never Made
Having grown up in New Delhi before relocating to London in later life, Shivani Sen’s single ‘The Call I Never Made’ is a meditative reflection on a relationship that truly reflects the two backdrops of her life so far. Blending together elements of Western indie-pop with the more traditional instrumentation of her home, the track soon blooms into multifaceted life; a piano ballad transformed by sitar, tanpura, tabla, temple bells and more.
Sofia Gobbi - Bigger Man
There’s nothing like making an entrance, and kicking off a track with the words “this song sucks” is a playful, attention-grabbing power move that’s sure to prick up the ears of anyone listening. Channeling the same smirking swagger of Wet Leg or fellow newcomers The Pill, Sofia Gobbi’s ‘Bigger Man’ is an instant indie-rock earworm that cheekily decries a particularly disappointing male specimen before bursting into guitar-fuelled, hook-laden life.
