There’s a real sense of cultural awareness where Harlem’s latest hip hop pioneer Dominic Lord is concerned. The fashion designer turned rapper emerges with a Grimes-indebted neo-rave sound and a more bespoke approach to his aesthetic than many of his peers. All this is evident in his debut video for the Hudson Mohawke produced ‘Pierce’ – a video that cuts out two thirds of the way through due to a hidden meaning that Lord wants you to “realise”. Profound stuff, but it all contributes to the great Lord’s appeal.

A former member of the A$AP crew, Lord insists he still has love for Rocky despite remaining tight lipped regarding the circumstances of his departure. Whatever happened, it’s unimportant now as Lord comes into his own within the world of highly stylised, ethereal hip hop.
