Already in 2012, we’ve seen the R&B genre skewed and twisted into new shapes, altered to adapt to fresh surroundings. Rhye wowed the blog crowd with ‘Open’, the kind of song that Frank Ocean could turn into a No.1 hit if a lightbulb appeared above his head. Speaking of Ocean, in Evy Jane’s debut track - another effort to spin this crossover technique majestically - the production revisits the tranquilised-haze of his own breakthrough track, ‘Novacane’. Evelyn Mason’s traditionally pop vocals are locked into a vacuum chamber of soft dub beats and tight, tapping percussion. It’s another prime example of unconventional, exciting R&B. 

The Canadian duo have a debut 12” out on King Deluxe, over in their native. More sedated, soul-scratching pop is inevitably on its way.
