News Female Band: ‘If Bjork Is Free, She Can Give Us A Call’

We catch up with the duo ahead of their performance at this weekend’s Brainlove festival.

Sometimes we really do have to wonder whether there’s some sort of conspiracy. Are bands making it deliberately hard to find information about themselves? Anyone who’s had the misfortune of heading to Google image search for a picture of the band Yuck can tell you all about it. And Female Band are yet another in the long line of artists with ‘unGoogleable’ band names. We catch up with the duo to get to know them a bit better ahead of their performance at this weekend’s Brainlove festival.

Your name suggests an air of mystery and it’s quite difficult to find anything out about you online - is that deliberate?
That’s pretty spot on, we did it precisely for this reason.

A while back you were cited as being one person and now you’re a duo - is that a case of people getting confused or has someone joined the band? Are there any more members on the horizon?
People are always confused. But I am big fan of Slipknot so watch this space…

What are you working on at the moment, is there an album on the cards?
A limited edition EP titled ‘Goodbye New York, Forever’. That should be out hopefully at the end of this month.

Are you currently working with a label?
Yeah, this will come out on Italian Beach Babes. We feel very comfortable with this label. Conan from Mazes runs it and he is really nice person.

How would you describe your ‘sound’ to people who might be looking to check you out for the first time this weekend? Can you talk us through your influences?
I love talking about people who I admire musically more than what we sound like ourselves. At the moment I’m really into Raime, Old Apparatus, Portishead and Perfume Genius. Melissa is into stuff like Four Tet, Burial, that sort of stuff. We are both big fans of Mount Kimbie though, and our friends in bands like Flamingods, Novella, Magic Eye and Vision of Fortune.

How do you go about writing new music?
Either at rehearsals or by sending each other files over the internet. Sometimes we write together, sometimes separate.

If you could work with any producer(s) on your debut album, who would it be?
James Murphy, definitely! I’m a big fan of his. But I do like the idea of producing things myself. But if Bjork is free, she can give us a call too…

Female Band will perform at this weekend’s Brainlove Festival at the Brixton Windmill. Check here for more details.
