It was a surreal experience, seeing hordes of lads with their arms up at Reading Festival, hands raised in an unusual lock, as the triangle sign was projected by hundreds of onlookers, towards a band who make quiet, brooding, unconventional pop. Beer-guzzlers have a soft spot for the tender and the progressive, and while they might be some way off purchasing a copy of Wild Beasts’ ‘Smother’ and spending evenings in sipping green tea and stroking their Egyptian Mau cat with it playing in the background, the tides are changing. Alt-J’s inevitable Mercury Prize nod only furthers the point.
Fun Adults exist as the chosen extension from all of this, although their music is some distance off making a mark on radio playlists and crowds in their thousands. The Leeds band’s first effort was an obtuse, ambient loop-heavy number with hints of a Wild Beasts style emerging some eight months back. ‘Til Sleep’, a debut single on Tough Love, is an even greater feat. “Sap solid, melancholic” goes the dreamy chorus. It leaves you marvelling in wonder, such is its complexity and modesty. It’s one of the least showy, most restrained works of pop 2012 has seen. And it’s too good for lads.
‘Sap Solid’ is out 15th October through Tough Love. Stream below:
