Maybe it’s something they’ve started putting in the water in Copenhagen…

Is there a place on earth at the moment producing more hits per head than Copenhagen? Having already sampled the local delights of Taragana Pyjarama’s Sudanese Blonde and the ludicrously brilliant Kilimanjaro, Georgiaa is the latest Dane to make hearts swoon.

And boy, how they swooned. A few demos popped up on all the usual places and got blogged about by the select few who put in the energy to find them, with a selection of blogs paying tribute to the tenderly crafted excellence of the strangely titled single ‘Georgia’ without allowing their minds to wonder much further than the six or so minutes that encapsulate it’s two tracks. Slightly jangly, with a suppressed 80’s feel, there’s a spark of brilliance that doesn’t really feel fulfilled.

And then, in a matter of days, the veiled potential was unleashed, with a new EP debuting on BandCamp, headed by opening track ‘Weeks’. A masterful display of subtly and the subdued, it’s got the scope and scale of a distant horizon, the sense of it being viewed in the early hours, shaking from cold but appreciative of its majesty. There are times when new acts need to be more aware of their audience, but the joy in this piece comes from the fact that this is a genius indulging his isolation with such a fickle melody and managing to make it work.

The rest of the EP – entitled ‘The Lake’ – shows varying degrees of an artist truly coming into his own, constantly on the verge of a masterpiece. Maybe it’s something they’ve started putting in the water in Copenhagen, or maybe it’s just something the rest of the world has been missing out of until now, but none of that really has any bearing on the fact that one of the most intriguing solo artists of recent years has just been unearthed within it’s boundaries.
